New Brows Who Dis

The old brows can’t come to the phone right now, why? Becos they’re dead.

Salutations all you beautiful people, how are you. So big news, big news… I got a new brow product YEAH! After using a brow pencil for so long, thinking of using any other product to fill my brow seemed downright scary. I mean, how would I know if a new product would suit me? How would I know if I would be able to use it skillfully? How would I know whether or not I would like the new look? The only thing I could do was venture out into the big brow world and see what I could see. The calling to a new brow was finally answered after I noticed a Sephora sale on the Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade, the little pot of dark pigment that every makeup artist I admire has in their collection. Three words: added to cart. For a whopping $15.50 USD I snagged my very own iconic pot of alleged brow magic and eagerly awaited its arrival and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

So why do brows matter? Hmm good question. First of all your brows change the entire look of your face. In the words of the iconic Zoe Foster Blake, “Overly thin brows amplify flaws and make non-flaws start to become one. They make your nose look bigger. Chin pointier. Face wider…. It’s aging and it’s unflattering” (Zoe Foster Blake, Amazing Face, 2016). In short, brows are crucial, and grooming (which includes makeup-ing) your brows is extraordinarily crucial to making sure you can fulfill your face’s best potential. As I said in a previous post “brows have power, fear the brow.”

Here cometh the Dipbrow. On arrival, I was surprised to see the texture of the product in person. Creamy (much creamier then I had expected), highly pigmented, and very soft in texture, if that makes sense. Almost like a firm mousse or a really creamy eyeshadow. One gentle tap on the surface of the product was enough to do a single brow impeccably. I was awestruck. How could such a small pot of pigment last for so long? I don’t have an eyebrow brush thin enough to do individual hair strokes, but I found my Amazon eyebrow brush did the job just fine.

I took a regular eyebrow brush with a spoolie end and dipped the brush side very gently onto the surface of the product, just enough to see that some pigment was picked up. Less is more here, the pomade is VERY pigmented so use it sparingly to avoid overly darkened brows or looking like you rubbed charcoal on your forehead (no no sistah we are aiming for natural flawless brows, unless you’re into charcoal brows to which I say you do you). After filling in my sparse areas (which for me is mainly the tail of the brow) I used the spoolie to brush the product out which left them looking natural and subdued. The trick is to outline your brows very gently with the brush and to then fill them in stoking upwards to mimic hair. There really is no right way to do this, truly it just depends on personal preference. There’s a learning curve to this product, but it is not as scary or difficult as I thought it would be. Really you just have to play around with it until you find what you like and what suits your face. The one thing I do recommend, though, is always brushing them out with the spoolie afterwards.

I dipped one side of a Q-tip into water and cleaned the area around my brows, flipping it after to the dry side to pick up and dry any residual pigment and voia la! Beautiful brows.

Dipbrow comes in a plethora of shades, ranging from blonde all the way to ebony. There’s a shade for everyone and every desired look. For context I have a neutral skin tone and medium brown hair and I found the color “Dark Brown” to be perfect for my brows which are slightly darker than my hair color. I am no color expert, however, and if you have any doubts I recommend contacting someone at Sephora or looking up full swatches to see what looks closest to what you want.
