Beauty Is Not A Pie

We don’t have to fight over slices

One of the reasons I was apprehensive to write these posts was the fact I was nervous it would seem like I was claiming a “chunk” of beauty for the Asians. I didn’t want it to seem like I was dismissing other people’s beauty, or making it seem like we should have the spotlight entirely. I think in my previous posts I’ve made it clear (I hope I’ve made it clear) that my deepest desire is increased representation for all, that it is my enduring belief that we all deserve to have role models and inspirational people in the places we dream of reaching. But I realized that representation and beauty is not a pie. Just because we get increased representation, increased acknowledgment, doesn’t mean there’s any less for anyone else. I think the ALM movement, in response to the BLM movement, invoked the idea that if we bring more awareness and urgency to one group’s need, we are taking away from another group’s importance, which is just not true. There is enough room in society to celebrate everyone and to bring representation that accurately reflects the groups of people that exist in society.
